Georeferencing in GIS is the process of using points, like an intersection, on an image (such as a map or photo) to align or transform the image to match the GIS basemap correctly. Residual error is the difference between where the control point on the image should land and where it actually lands. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) combines all residual errors into a single measure, which makes it easier to determine the accuracy of the georeference.
I learnt that data capture via screen digitising can be helpful but sometimes tricky. Making sure areas are not overlapping to allow the auto complete feature to work properly and keeping at a consistent scale without drawing too much detail. Having previously have studied design, it was nice to feel a bit of familiarity with the vector type tools — but still lots new to learn when it’s digitising data instead of graphics.
